Is it true that weight lifting at a young age can shorten your adult height?!

Question:

Is it true that weight lifting at a young age can shorten your adult height?

Answers:

yes...it can damage your GP (growth plates) because they are not fully developed yet. I started lifting in 9th grade the day after football ended... i was told thats the earliest you should start...however we have 7 graders in the weight room now at school... i guess if you lift light weights and more reps the chances of damaging your GP's are not very high... and you will still get a stronger and more toned.
