Have you used antacids and lost weight?!

Question:

Have you used antacids and lost weight?

There was an article in Yahoo News, "Could nerve snipping cause weight loss" that said doctors noticed that when they cut the vagus nerve in patients with ulcers, it seemed those patients lost weight. They thought some of it was due to a lower production of gastric acid, an acid that digests food. The reason for the weight loss was that food was digested more slowly when less acid was available.

So it seems that antacid tablets could help a person lose weight by lowering the amount of acid available for digestion.

Answers:

Sorry, but that won't work long term. The stomach will just produce more acid, which will result in you becoming dependent upon the antacids to avoid stomach upset and eventual ulcer.

Besides, antacids have sugar and flavoring that will contain more calories than the antacids would prevent you from digesting.
