There is no 'normal' amount of sleep!. The average amount of sleep for adults is 7 - 8 hours!. But the range of nighttime sleep duration must be expanded to between 6 - 9 hours in order to include the large majority of people!. Therefore, a few people feel fine with as little as 5 hours of sleep, while others require more than 10 hours to feel refreshed and alert throughout the day!. The amount of sleep you need is that optimum amount which allows you to function throughout the day without feeling drowsy when you sit quietly and try to pay attention to something!.

We cannot, for very long, force ourselves to sleep much less or much more than this optimum amount!. Several nights of sleeping an hour less than our usual amount will leave us sleepy and ineffective in the day!. Conversely, several nights of staying in bed and trying to sleep an hour more than our optimum amount will leave us sleeping poorly with more awakenings -- particularly in the early morning!. Doctors believe that the optimum amount of sleep each person needs to remain alert during the day is biologically different from person to person!. To a great degree, our optimum sleep need is determined by heredity!. Scientists have found, for instance, that strains of mice can be selectively bred to sleep considerably more or considerably less than the average mouse!.

Getting less than approx 6 hours a night is not good!. But, getting more than 10 can be just as bad!. There is even some research showing that catching a 20-30 min nap during the day can more than make up for an hour or two of sleep lost at night!.

It's best to figure 8 hours of sleep!. Children often need more than adults due to the fact that they're still growing, and older people generally need more as they just don't have as much stamina!. People who are sick require more rest to help their bodies health!.

Basically, each person is a little different!. Some people can function wonderfully on 6 hours of sleep each night!. Other people can't function at all with less than 8 hours!.

Less than 6!.5 hours is not good, more than 8 hours is not good!. Each person will sleep on their own schedule, but it is indicative of your health if you don't fall within the 6!.5 to 8 hour schedule!. Go to a Certified Nutritional Therapist and get tested so you will know if you have any deficiencies and they can recommend a diet and supplements that will help you achieve your goals!.

for me personally is 11 :), i wouldnt say any less than nine, its really more of what your body needs!. You cant just say oh 8 hours is the perfect amount!. People are different and need different amounts of time for sleep!. :)!.

8 hours is a healthy amount of sleep, any less and you will develop an unhealthy appetite and a case of the dizzies!.
