Should There Be a Fatty Food Tax?!

Question: Should There Be a Fatty Food Tax!?
Since more and more people are overweight and the problem is just growing, should an additional tax be imposed upon fatty foods!? Do you think people would begin choosing the non-taxed healthy food over the taxed fatty food!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I've been for this for a LOOONG time!. Put a 10% tax on fast food joints - paying an extra 50 cents on a $5 value meal will not hurt business much at all!. Phase the tax into the fatty supermarket items as well - cakes, ice cream, tater chips, etc!.

I'm not sure how much it would effect peoples' eating habits, but the money could surely help cover healthcare expenses, which are going to grow by massive amounts over this century!.

It's only fair since we hit smokers so hard for their bad habit!. And they actually cost the healthcare system less than overweight and fit people!

Unfortunately, the industry(s) have a lot of lobbying power, which means a fat tax will probably never happen!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

the problem with that type of excise tax is that it would disproportionately affect poor and working class since they spend more of their income on food in general - and fatty food in particular - than wealthier classes!. that's regressive!.

on the other had, high fat diets are an economic bad for society!.

therefore, i'm all in favor of a tax that discourages consumption but only to the extent that its proceeds are used to offset the harm and economic bads created by that consumption!. the second that tax gets diverted to general funding, i'm opposed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Considering how expensive "health food" is, a tax on the much cheaper "unhealthy" food is not going to make a difference unless it is upwards of a 100% tax rate--which then would only amount to a fine against the obese!. Why be so concerned about other people's diets anyway!?!?

You also make two erroneous assumptions--both that the obese only eat fatty foods, and that only the obese eat fatty foods!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, I think there should be!. They tax everything that is unhealthy, why not fat!. They tax cigarettes an alcohol!. If they do this in an attempt to "help" the general public why not do it elsewhere!. It would reduce obesity and it would reduce obesity related health problems which would in turn reduce the cost of healthcare!. Absolutely!Www@Answer-Health@Com

NO!

Then, instead of fighting the use of trans fats and such, which is the HEALTHY route, people will just pay more! The government will be less likely to fight the issue itself of public health because they benefit from the unhealthiness!. They would never actually try to end obesity, but just suck the money out of them like a leech!.

This question should be taken down ebfore someone in Washington sees it and starts getting ideas!Www@Answer-Health@Com

well of course they would start eating healthier, but it just depends really where you live!.
if you live in a poor comunity, then there goes the obesity problem there, well for the most part!.
but if you live in a pretty rich place, then hell naw, it wont help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Let me guess!. You work for the government don't you!?
No more taxes!!!!!
Unless you want to tax the moron companies that add all the cheap fats to our foods so they can reap the profits while destroying our health!.
Freedom, not taxes!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, its a good idea, but if you think about it it would never work!. It would be impossible to determine which foods would be taxed and there would be an angry obese public!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Why, they would probably still buy it, and it's unnecessary, especially with the high grocery prices already!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes that sounds like quite the intersting idea!.
Although there would be many debates on what is considered "fatty foods"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well, some ppl have eat fatty foods, but they still work out so they r fit, so those ppl that still manage their lifestyle well would be paying for really no reason, so i dont think so!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, people can eat what they want!. And some people can only afford fast food!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That's like saying they should have an extra tax on chemo with all the people getting cancer from smoking!.!.!.

NO!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's a clever idea, but I doubt it would pass through any legislation!. There would be hell from alot of the public!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. Totally agree!Www@Answer-Health@Com
