How does bulimia affect running, especially Cross Country?!

Question: How does bulimia affect running, especially Cross Country!?
I was diagnosed with Bulimia a little bit over two years ago!. This is my second year doing Cross Country for my high school but around this time last XC season, I was slowly recovering!. I believe a few months after the season my "eating disorder" was returning quicker and now I cannot help it but continue my habits after meals!. My summer running practices have begun and I wanted to know how much it is affected by my eating habits!.

Additional details: I do not consume large amounts of food but a bit less than half of a meal because I get full easily and I still find discomfort and continue my habit!. I do not use laxatives or overexercise but it is embarassing to admit that I do purge!. I have found myself breathing heavier than I do during a distance run but I tell my coach that I am just really out of shape!.

Thank you and please, this is a serious question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think you need a re-diagnosis!. Part of bulimia is binging!. You mention that you restrict and that just doesn't fit with the diagnostic criteria for bulimia at all!. You HAVE to binge eat to be bulimic!.

What I think you might be suffering from is anorexia - purging type or ED-NOS if you're still having a period!. Please go back and see another doctor, misdiagnoses of eating disorders can be extremely serious because it means receiving improper treatment!.

As far as food goes, no you can't give up carbs (just make sure they're complex carbs) and while I understand why you hate nuts - you need some kind of protein or you're going to lose your muscle mass and completely ruin your cross country altogether!.

Losing muscle mass will give you the opposite of the results you want - you may lose a few pounds but you'll be flabby instead of lean and fit!. You'll have more loose skin, and even if you're skinny you won't really look it!. Not to mention how bad your running will suffer and how out of shape you'll be come (no matter how hard you train)!.

I would really like to give you an article that is very relevant to you, but you have emailing via your profile turned off!. If you want to email me for it, you can do so through my profile!. I don't want to post it here because it could be misused by people without an eating disorder to try and purposely develop one (wannarexics) and I will not do that, but I feel it could be extremely helpful to you!.

It's a hard situation, I understand completely, but in the end you may really have to choose between having an eating disorder and your running, as the more muscle mass you lose from restricting and purging, the less energy you'll have and the less you're going to be able to run (for both reasons)!.

I've really held my tongue on this because I don't want to put up information that would help a wannarexic along, but please feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like the article I mentioned (which I think could help you maybe have a "best" of both worlds type situation until you're ready to recover)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, I'm sure you've heard all the stuff about what bulimia does to your body already, so I'm not going to repeat it!. But the bottom line is, if your body isn't getting enough nutrients, you're going to suffer!. You probably shouldn't run so much if you're not eating enough because you'll just wear yourself out!. My suggestion would be to get help and stop your old habits!. It's really dangerous!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

cross country is an endurance sport!. not having adequate energy(food) or liquids will hinder performance significantly and might make you get headaches or feel lightheaded!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I dont think you should be running if you are bulemic!. you dont have enough nutrients in your body to keep it fueled!. Your body needs food to work properly!. It can really affect your heart too!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I ran cross country competitively in high school and for a division 1 college!. Unfortunately, I've seen a good amount of girls with bulimia or anorexia!. In every case, the thinner they became, the weaker they got and the worse their times were!.

Fueling your body is extremely import when participating in an endurance sport!. Just think of all the athletes that 'carbo-load' before races or take protein filled gel packs with them on long runs!. Without the proper fuel your body will break down!. I've seen girls who are healthy eaters faint because they didn't eat breakfast the morning before a long run!. If you purge your body won't get the necessary nutrients!.

The most important thing is to be healthy before you strain your body with sports!. I know that's probably not what you want to hear but it's the truth!

Please get some help! If you are close with your coach, you should confide in her, she might be able to help!. Otherwise tell someone else you trust that you are still having problems!. When someone else knows your struggle and can provide support you will be more motivated to overcome the problem!. Good Luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know you probably don't want to do this, but you may find the answers you are looking for!. Go ahead and speak to your coach and get their opinion on your performance (they can judge it first hand)!. I know its something you don't want to admit to, but you should be able to speak in confidentiallity!. They may be able to help you without the rest of the team knowing and without you having to quit running!.

When I was in high school, I didn't have an eating disorder but I rarely ate GOOD things!. I was always tired and clumsy during basketball season!. On the days when I did eat right, the difference was like night and day!.

Good luck on your bulimia, I'm sure you can beat it! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
