I've been doing most of my shoe-shopping lately online at Zappos. I like that they ship to you for free and you can return anything you don't want, also for free. Zappos has unusual sizes and tons of brands. The best thing, though, is the customer rating system. Most shoes you look at will have reviews from people who have purchased the shoe, whether they liked it or not. Often, the reviews are quite detailed and include whether sizing is accurate or not.
My favorite brands for walking are Earth and Dr. Martens.
