Weight control vs. fat acceptance... Discuss.?!

Question: Weight control vs!. fat acceptance!.!.!. Discuss!.!?
America the beautiful, where the average BMI is 28!.!.!.

Should people be encouraged to love their extra weight, or to trim it off!? Left and right I see 12-year-old girls who weigh 80 pounds asking if they're fat, in the same section as 5'2" 140-pounders being told they're perfect and they should love their bodies!. Who knows what to think anymore!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I think everyone should learn to love the bodies they have!. I am not saying that if you are overweight you should not try to lose weight but you should love your body enough to get healthy!. Young girls should not be so worried about being fat and should learn about being healthy and the "5'2" 140-pounders" should also learn to love their bodies and learn about being healthy!!

EDIT: Leafsfan!.!.!. People should focus on their overall health and be accepting of others, and to that, have a realistic picture of what normal looks like (and for women, it's the size 12/14, NOT the size 1/2)!. Who says a size 1/2 can't be normal!?!? Who says a size 12/14 is normal!?!? I am a size 1/2 so are you saying I don't have a normal body!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

For a start 12 year olds shouldn't even be on here posting!.

And just to take your example of 5ft2 and 140lb, I know a couple of girls with those stats who still have body fat percentages in the 20's, so I think you have to take into account frame size, muscle mass, etc, not just weight and height!.

I think the BMI is mostly poo, and people should go by their body fat percentage and also waist/hip ratio!. You'd be surprised how many technically 'overweight' girls are not overfat at all and also by the amount of apparently normal weight girls who have a high body fat percentage!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think that as long as you feel good about yourself than that is all that matters!. But, if you are overweight I feel like you should be encouraged to trim it off!.

As for the 12 year old girls, I they are trying to compare themselves to the 20 year old girls that are posing in the teen magazines and on tv!. I do notice alot more "normal" size models, which is relieving!.

I am 24 years old, 5'-2" and 140 lbs!. I am lucky to have gained my weight evenly, but my BMI is 33%! I am overweight! Although I have alot of people that encourage me and tell me I look great, I should loose at least 15 lbs!. I got to 140 lbs night snacking and smoking pot!.

Obvoiusly, I have been unhealthy!. Just by cutting out the extra snacks, eating better and drinking water I have lost 10 lbs in 2 months!. The goal BMI for me personally is 26%!.

You feel better when you dont have all of the extra weight, but there is a difference between being getting to a healthy weight and being anorexic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think there is a problem with hollywoods "Paris Hilton" and "Olsen twins" portrayal of what beauty is!. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!. Thanks to MTV, you ar right, we have 80 pound girls thinking they are fat!. The fation magazines show only anorexic coke head models!. not good role models for teens!.

I think weight should be about health!. Nothing more!. If you are a bit overweight, you should lose weight because it is good for you, not because you are owned by the girls in "the hills"Www@Answer-Health@Com

People should focus on their overall health and be accepting of others, and to that, have a realistic picture of what normal looks like (and for women, it's the size 12/14, NOT the size 1/2)!.

By health, I'm talking things like heart disease, type 2 (adult onset diabetes, cancer, and a whole host of problems that come from a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits!.

With that being said, I feel for women in that the ideal that society talks about is unachievable for 99% of the population; people have bumps, lumps, and places that jiggle and wiggle (both men and women)!. Of course, the 1% also have had enough plastic surgery for the rest of the population!.

The rub, of course, is that being reasonable was long thrown out the window, and so we get extremes!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I believe people should be the healthiest!. If someone is obese, and the media is like "love your curves!", I'd feel that they are lying!. Sometimes, it isn't curves, it's really just unhealthy fat!. Moderation is key!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Actually the answer is exercise not diet!. People who exercise regularly tend to be lean, as being overweight interferes with exercise!. Work out and don't overeat all that much!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think people should be happy with themselves, but if their body fat becomes a health risk then they should start working out, in general being over weight is not good for your bodyWww@Answer-Health@Com
