Serious question. can anybody be overweight all their life without a health prob!

Question:

Serious question. can anybody be overweight all their life without a health problem?

Answers:

In theory, NO.

The word 'overweight' implies that there is too much of something; that's an imbalance, and it isn't healthy.

In fact, 'overweight' is a myth. Your weight is a very poor indicator of any aspect of health or fitness. It is normally (and wrongly) assumed that any 'extra' weight is excess bodyfat, but the amount of stored fat is one of the slowest things to change in your body. Most bodybuilders and rugby players would be classified as 'overweight' by height/weight calculations such as BMI.

In reality, NO.

Anybody without health problems for their whole life would be a walking miracle, whether they are skinny or chubby, short or tall. A lot of medical problems that are linked to fatness, also affect skinny people; sometimes, the problem is that the treatment is less effective in people with a lot of fat.

Most problems linked to fatness also have an element of 'susceptibility'. That means that the link isn't absolute, like 'you're fat, so you're guaranteed to suffer from ...'. Risk is usually (wrongly) expressed in percentages, so that you are more LIKELY to suffer from ..., if your bodyfat is above a certain figure. Fat is a 'risk factor', because they've examined lots of people, and noticed that more of those with a high bodyfat, also have ... .

(The correct name for this is 'incidence', meaning how often something measurable HAS happened. Something that hasn't happened (but might) is a 'risk', and it's a yes/no measurement. You can't calculate percentages until it's happened)

Statistically, it is possible for somebody without any 'risk factors' to develop a disease. Equally, it's possible for somebody with all known risk factors, to avoid the disease. That's why Gene Testing is controversial; having particular genes would be a strong incentive for buying treatment, even though you might never get the disease linked to that particular gene.
