Question for weight trainers, body builders, fitness people?

What, in layman's terms, is a catabolic state and how do you know when you've reached it during a workout?

hi. catabolic means the breaking down of substances to create energy. in muscle building terms it means that your body is breaking down your muscle to provide it's energy source (not good). it would really only occur when you've pushed yourself so hard that your body has nothing else to burn, so it resorts to muscle. this can also occur when overtraining does. yet another reason to limit how many times in the week you work your muscles.
