Is this normal? (Eating disorder question)?!

Question:

Is this normal? (Eating disorder question)?

My sister had bulemia for several years and is trying to beat it. My mom has taken all of the snacks, cold cuts, peanut butter, etc, and put them in her room whenever the rest of the family is not using it because my sister asked for her to do this. She used to binge eat and then throw everything up. This just doesn't seem healthy to me because it seems like she is trying to avoid certain foods, which you certainly can't do your whole life!

She also won't eat meals with the family. She will make her own, which usually consists of some fruit, and a little bit of meat.

Do you think is an effective way of trying to beat bulemia?

Answers:

No, this is not an effective method, because she is not learning to controll her binging when there will be food around her and in her access, and overly restricted is a sign her eating disorder may be transforming into another ED, anorexia. The only effective treatment for bulimia is going into to a treatment program or speaking to a one-on-one therapists (it works better when you get to see and actually talk to the person) and nutritionist. The treatment program is probably the best option success wise, however they can be VERY costly. Both inpatient (stay overnight) and out pateint (go only during the day time for meals, sleep at home) can cost literally thousands of dollars per DAY. Seeing a nutritionest who will establish a doable meal plan that won't cause her to starve herself so much that she binges along with a counsler who will help her deal with the temptation to binge and purge is a cost-efficient possible ticket to recover.
