I want to tone up before the next school year...?!

Question:

I want to tone up before the next school year...?

I am pretty slim and happy with my figure, but I know I literally have no upper body strength. I am planning to do cross country before the school year to tone up my legs. I want to have strong arms and torso, plus become more flexible. I drink a lot of water, and try to avoid sweets, and I never drink soda. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can tone up a little bit more before the school year?
