Assuming the protein source is whey, it's best to consume after a workout!. In that state, your body is ready to absorb nutrients as it rebuilds the muscles that you've just torn (on a microscopic level)!. Ideally, you want something that has carbs as well, maybe like a 2:1 ratio!. So something like 40g carbs to 20g protein!. This is the one time in the day when you actually want to take in sugars, because your glycogen stores should be drained from the workout!. Anyways, it's easy to make yourself actually!. Buy some whey powder and mix that with any kind of milk, juice or Gatorade!. You'll have to experiment with what tastes good though!.
