Basically stretching reduces the risk of injury to muscles paticurally in sport!. A good warm up before Football or Rugby normally consists of around 5 minutes running first to get the muscles warm (as stretching with cold or rigid muscles could also cause injury) and then stretching out whilst the muscles are warm for around a further five minutes!. This helps to reduce the chance of tweaking or pulling a muscle!.

Another reason is to help movement!. Yoga and similar practices make you felxible and supple through their forms of stretching!. This makes your muscles less likely to recieve injury from day to day tasks as well!.

Stretching after excercise helps the muscles relax to a state where they were at before you began excercising i!.e!. a warm down after long distance running!. This in turn helps reduce the chance of a lactic acid build up!.

Ps!. Dont feel stupid I didn't get this myself until I studied it in Gcse P!.E!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As you get older and stay physically active you'll have a better sense of why stretching is important!. For now you'll just have to take it on trust!. Think of your muscles as being like taffy!. If you take a cool stick of taffy and pull it apart very quickly it will break!. If you work with it and stretch it gradually a few times and warm it up by working with it then you can pull it apart rapidly and it will just stretch!. Your muscles work exactly the same way!. As you get older your muscle tissue begin to lose even more of it's elasticity so that the older you are the more important it is to stretch!. But even at a young age you should still warm up and stretch before playing sports to help avoid injuries!. It also makes you a better player because your muscles are more reactive when already warmed up so you start the game at peak performance instead of needing the first five minutes of the game to get warmed up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There was a study released on this a couple of years ago!. They had 500 people stretch before exercising and 500 not stretch!. The study lasted 5 years and it concluded the people that stretched got just as many injuries as a result of exercise as those who didn't stretch!. In fact they said those that didn't stretch actually got a few more injuries but it was in such small numbers that it wasn't considered statisically significant!. Of course there will be those who will argue with this but this was a controlled medical study!. It also said that other less scientific studies also seemed to corroborate these findings!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
