Yes, and they don't work your stomach muscles either as they are too focussed on your thighs!. You can only do them properly with really strong core back strength to begin with!.
Instead, do 'stomach crunches'!.
Lying flat on your back and looking at the ceiling, your feet placed flat on the floor knees bent, clench your tum muscles and touch your knees with your fingertips/ hands!. Do it slowly and carefully, when it begins to hurt do ten more and you know you've worked your tum good!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They are only bad for your back if you do them incorrectly & if you do them on the floor or ground on it's own!. It is better if you do them on an exercise mat, so that you bones in your back are not pressing down hard on hard ground!.

If you do them wrong, they could be!. You should keep your back straight while doing them!. If you can't, try something easier (not sure what), until you're able to do them with your back straight!. Then they should be OK!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
