Training with weights?!

Question:

Training with weights?

I have a question for the knowledgeable fitness buffs out there. I have been trying to get my legs and arms in shape by lifting dumbbells along with an exercise DVD. I lift between 5-10 lb. weights for a total of 20 minutes on arms and then do squats and lunges for legs. How often should I be doing this? I have been trying to get my shoulders, biceps and triceps in shape especially, so have been doing it every day. Is it better to do weights every other day, or is every day ok? Also, I am looking to be lean and toned, not exactly the Hulk, so is it better to do more reps at lower weights, or less reps at higher weights. If anyone truly knows the best advice, I would greatly appreciate. My cardio consists of rebounding every day for 30 minutes (either with DVD or just jogging for 30 minutes). I used to walk 4 miles a day, but with kids out of school, it doesn't work right now. Thanks everyone!

Answers:

wherever you are doing a tone workout, you essentially want to do more reps at a lower weight. With that in mind, you have to make sure not to go to light. If you are doing high reps make sure you find a weight that you can do for a good amount of time, but will still make you struggle. If you can finish off maybe 20 reps of that weight without feeling completely tired you will know that you have to increase your weight to something that will make you struggle a little more. Also, aerobics and other cardio type workouts like yoga and pilates are great ways to tone if you don't want to add a lot of muscle mass.
