Answers:

Edema (fluid retention on the legs) can be caused by a few things.

- Prolonged standing or sitting, especially in hot weather, can cause excess fluid to accumulate in the feet, ankles and lower legs.
- Venous insufficiency is a common problem caused by weakened valves in the veins of the legs. This makes it more difficult for the veins to pump blood back to the heart, and leads to varicose veins and buildup of fluid.
- Malnutrition, kidney and liver disease can cause edema. The proteins in the blood help to hold salt and water inside the blood vessels so fluid does not leak out into the tissues. If the most abundant blood protein, called albumin, gets too low, fluid is retained and edema occurs, especially in the feet, ankles and lower legs.
- Dehydration
- Thyroid problems
- Heart or lung disease

Before you get all freaked by the latter, remember that with proper care and actions you can overcome a lot of things.
1. Drink enough water. And i mean water, not diet soda or juice.
2. Move a little. Start by walking a set distance that is comfortable for you, in the morning when it's fresh. Then every week, add a little distance. Walking does wonders for you, it promotes blood circulation, making your venous blood return more efficient. Varicose veins form because the muscles on your legs "tear" and let tiny portions of veins get caught in between, by toning your legs you can help circulation and avoid pain.
3. Do not wear tight clothing, never.
4. If you have to sit for a long time, get a stool and place it under your legs, so they can rest at level with your hips.
5. Fat and obese people can be anemic, so try to pay more attention to what you eat. You are used to eat more than what you burn, and you can still eat a lot, by changing what you eat.
For example, for breakfast, have a large bowl of oats cooked in water. Add a stick of cinnamon for taste. Use old-fashioned oats, not instant. Have it with water, not milk.
Midmorning, have a large bowl of fresh fruit, oranges are especially good for low potassium, so do bananas and they are NOT fattening.
For lunch, have a large salad, with anything you fancy on it, but season it with lime juice, salt, pepper and olive oil. You can have a sliced hard boiled egg or tuna or boiled chicken breast bits on it for protein.

And for dinner, add whatever vegetables you want or like to a home-made vegetable soup. Snack on unsalted, non-fried nuts.
