Do cold drinks produce negative calories?!

Question:

Do cold drinks produce negative calories?

For some time now, diet proponents have suggested the use of 8 glasses of water per day as a diet aid. While the goal in their mind seems to be hydration, is it possible there may be another effect of drinking large volumes of water, especially cold water?

Any substance we bring inside our body must be brought to body temperature. This is simple physiology. If we drink a glass of ice water, the tissues of our mouth, throat and stomach are cooled. Energy must be expanded to bring those tissues back to body temperature. It takes one calorie to raise 1 gram of water 1 degree. Therefore if I drink 1 liter (1000g) of water, I must expend 1,000 calories to raise the temperature of that water 1 degree. If it is a liter of ice water, then I must change the temperature of the water from 0 degrees to 37 degrees. That takes 37,000 calories. 2 months worth of dieting in one liter!!? Unfortunately, the food calorie is equal to 1,000 of these physics calories (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/calorie)...... So drinking my liter of ice water will only burn 37 food calories. Not a lot, but significant over time.

In case you’re wondering, one can of ice-cold diet Coke contains -13 calories.

Answers:

In that wiki article I see that each pound of fat contains 3500 food calories. So drink a liter of ice-cold water a day and in about 100 days, you've burned a pound of fat by warming cold water. I see your point -- this does add up!!

And, Squeeky, when faced with such astounding scientific reasoning, I can only bow my head in deep respect.
