What can i do to strengthen my leg muscles so i can have a higher vertical jump?

with out buying a machine

i play volleyball, basketball, and softball and a good vertical jump could really help me out in all the sports. i get a nice run in about everyday and i jump alot as well, considering i do play volleyball, and basketball. i just want to jump higher without a stupid machine


Answers:

Do lunges, squats, "wall sits", calf raises on a curb or stairs, jump rope, bike and/or run. However, some of it depends simply on skill and/or talent. You can be super-strong and still not be the best jumper!

For instance, I was a GREAT jumper when I was in high school and college. I was on the track team and one of my events was long jump. Also, I could easily jump up and grab the rim on a basketball hoop...but I couldn't shoot worth a damn, and could barely dribble a ball. So, just because I was a great jumper didn't make me a great basketball player. I was (and still am) awful at basketball!

So, while the exercises I've mentioned above will definitely help you get stronger and jump better, don't expect too much. Focus on what you do well! Speed, jumping, hitting the ball, throwing, swimming, or whatever your strengths are! Good luck!
