Working out questions?!

Question:

Working out questions?

if i just wanted to get toned i know i have to higher reps with lower weights but will i still gain muscle mass in pounds?? i heard you gain a lot of muscles in pounds if you lift heavy with lower reps which i have been doing all my life. My other question is is it possible to get big and toned at the same time?? i think its impossible because i think you have to get big first then tone the muscles afterwards am i correct please help for those who have success in the gym!

Answers:

First off, you won't grow if you don't eat the amount of food it takes to grow. So regardless of low reps or high reps, nutrition has a huge part of any workout routine.

Toning is a myth. You are referring to muscle definition. And this happens by increasing size and efficiency of a muscle. I would say compound exercises (squats, bench presses, etc.) work better for getting size, and localized exercises (bicep curls, tricep extensions, wrist curls) work best for focused muscle definition.

I can't completely answer your questions without many many pages. It has taken me years to learn the right exercises and the right way to do them. I suggest you do some research on the different types of muscle fibers in your body and how number of reps stimulates each fiber. Then you need to experiment for yourself and find out what works best for you. Good luck.
