What can I do to improve my physical strength the healthy way? (without steroids or drugs)?

I'm a pretty big, intimidating guy but secretly I'm not that strong. I've gotten into several fights and laid people out but that's mainly because I'm mad and I'm heavy handed. But Basketball try-outs are coming up and I want to improve my physical fitness. I can only Bench Press like 80 lbs and I wanna get that up to 120- 180.
