How effective is the South Beach Diet?!

Question:

How effective is the South Beach Diet?

Has anybody actually tried it and lost the amount of weight that they set out to lose without exercise? How long did it take you to lose the first 20 lbs?

Answers:

South Beach Diet is very effective, but you have to want to stick to it. And you can't think of it as a diet, you have to think of it as a way of eating. Because you will need to eat like that for the rest of your life.

You will need to avoid the foods they tell you to avoid (sugary, really fattening foods and foods that are high in bad carbs) and then eat the foods they say you can enjoy (lean protein, vegetables, grains, and the good carbs).

I started South Beach Diet on May 9th, and since then I've gone from a size 18 in jeans to a size 16. Last time I measured myself about 2 1/2 weeks ago.. I had lost 10 inches already from exercising and staying on plan (and that was after a month of being on South Beach), although I do cheat every once in a while, because you need to in order to committ to it.

During phase 1 you can lose anywhere from 5-13 pounds. Since all you can eat really is lean protein, veggies, yogurt, sugar free pudding/jello, salads and stuff like that. during phase 1 you can't have any bread or anything with any starchy foods in it. You can't have any grains, so for the first 2 weeks, you'd have to eat eggs for breakfast instead of cereal, oatmeal and stuff like that.

Once you're on phase 2, your weight loss will start to slow down a little and you'll lose about 2-3 pounds a week. And when people hit stalls, they go back to phase 1 to break from that stall. And once they've hit their goal weight, they go to phase 3 for mantainence and that's how they will eat for the rest of their lives.

I think SB is a really good way of eating because you aren't restricted from eating stuff you love (or I'm not). I don't get cravings for sweets anymore really, and my stomach has shrunk so much from learning to eat the good foods. I still eat stuff I love, I just have to make modifications. I can still eat chicken with bbq sauce, but I buy the bbq sauce with the lowest amount of sugar/carbs. Or if something can be bought sugar free, I do that such as sugar free jello, pudding, popsicles, fudgesicles.
