Is it possible?!

Question:

Is it possible?

I am a 13 year old guy. I weigh 70-75 pounds and I am 5'3 tall.

Just this last two months, I've been eating a lot. I am so desperate to gain weight for high school. My problem is I am not gaining but I am just getting taller.

My family and friends is confused why I'm not gaining even though I eat a lot. Do I have a disorder?

My family says I am not gaining this time because this is the first time I've eaten a lot so my height is what improving for now.

Do I have a disorder? Or my family is right that I am just getting taller at this moment?

I am not dead. And I am saying the truth. I don't look THAT thin because I am a volleyball player but I still look thin and I am underweight.

Is there a possibility I will finally have a healthy weight?

Can you help me? Is it possible that I can make my metabolism slower. I'm not doing anything, so that means my calories are not getting burned this summer. How can I gain... I'm desperate.

Yes, I feel healthy but I am conscious of what I look like.

Answers:

This is the age your body is growing and a lot of rapid change occurs fast. Don't worry if you think you are underweight or have a disorder. As long as you're eating a nutritious amount of food everyday (follow the food guide pyramid) and are getting the recommended amount of physical activity per day (30-60 minutes of moderate activity), then your weight is normal.

To be sure, go online and look for "BMI", or "Body Mass Index" and you should find sites that offer online scales. Type in the information they ask-height, weight, age, and they'll give you percentiles to determine whether you're underweight, overweight, or normal weight. Often times they look at the average out of most teens your age, so if the results they give are skeptical, be to sure consult with a doctor.

Whatever you do, don't fill your body with loads of fatty foods and junk. This includes high calorie sweets, fast food, fried foods, sodas, cookies, chips, etc. This will only lead to you getting high levels of blood sugar and puts you at a severely high risk for heart diseases, plus your body will gain only body fat, not muscle.

If you're looking to gain muscle, or pack a few healthy pounds, try eating plenty of good proteins that come from lean meats. Calcium in low fat milk helps bones grow strong, and healthy carbs from whole wheats and grains give you energy to work your best. Workout everyday and lift weights (be sure to consult a trainer!) to build muscle mass.

You're at your peak growing stage, so if you're height starts to shoot, that's nothing at all to be alarmed about. One reason your weight may seem underweight is because of this growing stage where your height is growing quickly in a short period of time, and your body still hasn't quite adjusted.

Plenty of rest at night (8+ hours) and water (8+ glasses a day) helps food digest properly and helps you grow properly.

It's much better to be healthy and active than to be at risk for all sorts of diseases from overeating and unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Stay healthy, stay active, and good luck!! =]
