Question about abdominal exercises?!

Question: Question about abdominal exercises!?
Hello out there!. I grew up in the 70's & 80's!. In gym class when ever we did leg raises or any other exercise that worked the abdominals through leg movements we were told to do them in a certain way!. Lie flat, put our hands under our back sides and do the leg raise exercise!.

We were told that this was the best way to do them because it protected the back!.

Years later I am doing leg raises the same way!. I was at a kick boxing class the other day and the instructor said not to do it like that!.

Suddenly I am questioning how I exercise! Was the hand placement just a fad!? Is it good or bad for you!?

Please help me out!. Where should the hands be placed for leg raises and why!? What is best for the back!?

Thanks in advance!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Im a boxer im 16 and i do leg raises for 2 minutes then get punched 5-10 times in the stomach!. When your doing leg lifts you put your pointer fingers and thumbs together to make a diamond like when doing diamond push ups and then you but them on your tailbone that way you give your tailbone proper support and prevents pinching or bruising!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The lying leg raise targets the lower abs and transverse abs!.
Lie on your back , legs are straight out in front!.
Hands are palms down and under your hips-it creates support!.
Sometimes you can do this without the hands under the hips, but I would only suggest it if you have good back and abdominal strength!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

What I found out from karate is that when your abs are weaker, you have to put you hands under yourself for more support; it makes the excersize easier!. Try it out sometime, I find it much harder to do ab workouts without using my hands!. It won't hurt your back to not use your hands, but you can only really do this after getting some good abs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Look into Pilates exercises!.!.!.it is AWESOME for the stomach and back!. I have only gotten as far as the intermediate exercises and I see great results!. They are great at strengthening the stomach and back in a short amount of time!.
