well i do both but different kinds though!. I use MUSCLE MILK before to help my muscles get through the workout!.Then I use some CREATINE to help rebuild them afterwards!. But if you cant do that then i suggest you take it after a workout so your muscles can rebuild themselves,so your workout would'nt be wasted!.Good Luck! when you lifts weights you tear muscles and protein repairs these muscles therefore making them stronger and larger
