Answers:
Yes, you should definitely have a pre-workout meal!. Whey protein is a good idea, like you said!. When you wake up you're in a catabolic state because your muscles and lvier have been depleted of glycogen during the night!.

You will no longer be in a positive nitrogen balance, because any protein you consume will only keep you in a positive nitrogen balance for a certain amount of time, and casein, the slowest-digesting protein is only good for 7 hours as far as keeping you in a positive nitrogen balance!.

Your body's nitrogen balance determines whether or not muscular growth is taking place, not going into detail unless you want me to!. Now, if you do cardio while in a catabolic state, fat loss will be maximal, but so will muscle loss!. I doubt you want to lose muscle mass, so your pre-workout meal should contain around 30+ grams of protein!.

Carbohydrates are a good idea too, for energy, and because consuming carbohydrates in the morning will help put your body in an anabolic state again, so muscular growth will once again take place!.

Don't go overboard though, because that will make fat loss harder, because carbohydrates will replenish glycogen storages, and glycogen is used up as energy before fat, so you will have to work harder and longer to get to the point where body fat is being burned!.

About the 8 hour gap, you should only have about a 6 hour gap if you were to do cardio before weightlifting, but if you aren't you don't need a gap!.

The reason for the gap would be to conserve energy during a lifting session, because cardio sessions expend a lot for energy, so results from lifting will be minimal if you workout after a cardio session!.

Edit: Well, energy isn't the only reason carbohydrates would be a good idea in the morning!. They are also important because they help switch your body from catabolism (your body is in a catabolic state upon awakening) to anabolism!.

If you don't need them for energy, you should have a small serving of carbohydrates!. Morning and post-workout are two times you can have "bad" carbohydrates, by the way, so you can even have a kool aid pre-workout if you want!. Again, not going into detail unless you want to know!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all, it's perfectly fine to lift weights and do cardio in a day!. But I would recommend having at least an 8 hour gap in between to refuel your body, especially when you're going to exercise intensely for both!.

For fat loss you don't need carbs!. Protein, especially Whey, is highly recommended after exercises but not before!. If you do want to eat, you can have a little bit of carbs like whole grains then wait an hour or two before you exercise!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Definitely eat before your workout but not too soon before!. A protein shake or meal replacement shake with protein is a great idea!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
