Depends on your goals!. If you want to shed fat, it has been shown in studies that first thing in the morning is best to do your cardio, before any food, on an empty stomach!. You hormones from sleeping are still in your blood which can help you lose fat faster!.

If you are bodybuilding, which everyone who lifts weights really is doing, just to a more or less degree, you will need some energy or you will fall flat half way through the workout, so maybe afternoon, evening time best for lifting weights!.

For me personally it's the morning!. I have a healthy breakfast and a cup of tea, then I workout!. I think it works for me because once I've worked out, I don't want to ruin my day by eating fatty foods, and I'll feel like my workout was for nothing if I cheat!.!.!. so it keeps me on track!.
