Wow that is definitely way too much! You are only supposed to have three servings of dairy per day!. Think of the calories in one serving, about 120, now there are eight servings in a gallon!. There are half of his daily needed calories in only the milk he drinks!. Limit it to two glasses (8 ounces) per day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

How old is your nephew!? How active is he!? Does he just drink milk!? How old is he!? What is his activity level!? A gallon of 2% milk is about 2000 calories and 128g of fat, about 85g from saturated fat -- not good!.

Milk is good, but not that much, unless he's is extremely active, especially in weight training working to build muscle!. I doubt that is the case, though, since you describe this as a weight problem!.

The saturated fat is something to be concerned with too!. The human body can produce saturated fat, but it all right to consume it as it cannot produce some of the fatty acids!. However, that amount of saturated fat is far too much, and the source is not the best!.

If that's all he consumes, then I don't think it would be the major cause of his weight problem!. But if that is in addition to normal meals, and he isn't very active, then yes, it is part of the problem -- the problem being too many calories being consumed!.

Very active means daily exercise for an hour or more, in addition to sports or other physical activities several times a week!. (I am not saying that if he does not currently do this, that he must begin immediately -- if he is not currently active, then he will need to slowly build up to higher endurance and duration in addition to modifying his diet; if he is consuming a lot of food in addition to the gallon of milk, then he will need to gradually decrease the calories by about 500 calories per week until he reaches a healthy intake level; ask about diet and exercise plans if that is the case!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

He might be overweight because he drinks too much milk, but milk is very healthy for a growing boy (assuming he's still growing)!. Although most doctors recommend Fat Free milk or 1% milk!. 2% has too much fat and could potentially be the reason why he is overweight!. Also a gallon of milk is a lot to drink in one day!. You should probably start by giving him 1% and see how it goes from there!. There isn't much of a difference in taste, 2% is just creamier!. But 1% is a lot healthier!. My brother loves to drink milk, and he gained a little bit of weight recently (he's15 and still growing though)!. So we switched him from 1% to fat free and he had some trouble adjusting to it (primarily because 0% is substantially less creamier) but now he drinks it without complaint!. He drinks about 2 to 3 glasses a day!. I know it helps him grow (he's grown 5 inches in 3 months!) and he's also become leaner!.

I hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com

It would probably help if he drank skim milk instead of 2%, but how old is your nephew!? Milk is REALLY good for growing kids and boys tend to eat people out of their house and home (my hubby could take out a large pizza by himself when he was 14)!. Since he's your nephew, it's not really your call as to whether or not he drinks too much milk, but perhaps you can discuss it with his parents and see what they think!. I think a gallon a day is too much, but does he drink anything else!? If not, then it would be normal to drink that much liquid!.!.!. with that being said, my suggestion is to try to see if his parents are willing to limit his milk intake (as well as try skim) to maybe half gallon a day and replace the rest of his liquid intake with water!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, I believe that that amount of milk in one day is a little too much, especially since it is 2%!.

I would switch the 2% milk to fat-free skim milk since 2% has a lot of fat in it!. Also, cut down his intake to maybe a gallon a week, if possible!. He should be drinking more water than milk!.

Hope that helps you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Possibly!. There is a lot of fat stored in even 2% milk!. Start slowly cutting down the milk he drinks, not take it away all at once!. And he should take up a sport he finds fun and entertaining!. Hope this helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
