You could try to encourage them to seek out help, but if you push it on them too much they may start shutting you out. If your friend is under 18, you should notify an adult, like a counsellor or their parent, or try to get them to bring it up. As for being a friend, just let them know that you're worried about them, and that if they need someone to talk to, or just do something to get their mind off things, you're always there. Leave it at that, and don't bring it up again really. If they look like they're having a hard time you could ask them if they're alright, but really they just need their friend, and for things to go on as normal. Obviously if you see that they're getting really sick you should take more direct action, but remember that they will only get better when they want to, and there isn't much you can do to change that. I've had an eating disorder for four years and what helped me the most was just knowing I had my friends support. I didn't get better until I wanted it for myself, and throughout treatment it was nice to know that my friends were always there to hang out as normal. Good luck, and I hope things turn out ok.
