Determining whether your weight is in a healthy range can be done by measuring your BMI, which for people at a healthy weight will fall between 18.5 and 25.0. When doctors try to assess whether a patient needs to undergo a change in diet, the BMI is usually the main parameter which they use to determine whether they are overweight. You can calculate and measure your BMI by plugging in your height and weight values into the following formula:
BMI= weight (in kg)/ height squared (in m)
Since you are 5'8" tall, and one inch is 2.54 cm, your height is 68 inches (2.54 cm/inch)=172.72 cm=1.7272 m
To find your weight in kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2: 103 lbs/2.2 lbs/kg=46.8 kg
Putting these values into the BMI equation, we obtain: 46.8 kg/ (1.7272 m) squared=46.8kg/2.9832 cm squared= 15.68
So, if you are asking this question because you feel overweight, just the opposite is true. You may actually be on the verge of developing an eating disorder, if you have not done so already. Granted, BMI alone cannot assess whether a person is at a healthy weight, since the percentage of body fat varies between people and can be influenced by factors such as muscle mass and bone density. Nevertheless, for the average person, BMI is an accurate indicator of whether their weight is healthy or not, and since your BMI is already below what some doctors would consider acceptable, I would strongly advise you to at the very least not lose any more weight, in order to avoid potential complications from anorexia, including permanent internal organ damage. You should also see your doctor, who will have your full medical history, as well as your bone density and muscle mass values, to obtain a more complete assessment of your weight.
Just one last thing to add. If your doctor advises you to gain weight, then junk food is not the way to do it, since many of the processed foods found at McDonalds and other fast food restaurants contain high percentages of saturated and trans fats, which can clog your arteries and put you at an elevated risk for heart disease. Instead, you should continue to eat healthy, and simply eat more and eat foods with a higher fat content. Of course, eating McDonalds once per couple of weeks or so will not do little if any damage, but you should not make a habit of eating too much of it, to prevent health problems such as hypertension and high cholesterol later in life.
