Answers:

A necessary pre-requisite to an attempt to point you in the right direction is this point:

Your question is full of contradictions which demonstrate a lack of fundamental understanding.

For example:
* Increased upper body muscle is NOT the key to running faster, especially long distance! Running is LEG work where arms are for balance rather than propulsion.
* Running - especially long-distance running - will encourage SLIM arms not more-muscular arms. To cope with long distances, your body will lose as much fat and muscle as possible - especially from your upper body.

For stronger, more muscular arms you should do exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, dips, bicep curls, and dumb-bell/barbell presses.

To get faster running - run! Set targets, train at different distances - for example shorter ones to get the pace up.

All things considered, my advice to you - if you wish to have muscular arms AND run fast - is this:
* Do the arm exercises described above
* Run short-medium distances: 100m minimum, 5-mile maximum, 1.5 mile ideal.

Only in the shortest distances will arm muscles aid speed - because the whole body contributes to the powerful forward thrusting and leverage required for top speeds. Thus, arm exercises and short-distance running will help give you an athletic physique that is quick!

I am a skinny long-distance runner and when I was a teenager I also wished I could bulk up my upper body -- for looks though, not so much to run better! I tried everything without much success (and wasted a lot of money). People with skinny body types often have more slow-twitch muscle fibers and fewer fast twitch fibers. While this muscle composition gives those with skinny body types the ability to excel in endurance activities, it also makes building significant muscle mass difficult (or impossible). Look at elite distance runners -- none have big upper bodies. If you really want to increase your speed for distance running, you might try increasing your pace during training, adding interval training or similar speed workouts. Lifting weights is still a good idea and will increase your strength. If you have a coach, talk to him/her about your training plans before doing anything. Good luck!

30 + years distance running.
