Is there such a thing as TOO much water?!

Question: Is there such a thing as TOO much water?
I drink a lot of water..I mean that's all I drink all day with the occasional soda or alcohol every own and then. I'd say I drink 2-3ltrs a day. I've now heard that this may be too much? I am very active in a physical job and go to the gym 5 times a week so I get thirsty! Any info would be great thanks.

Hi:)
There is such a thing as too much, you can actually get water poisoning:P
However, usually one recommends 2 liters a day, but if you have heavy physical work and exercise, you obviously need more those days(heck, I work at an aluminum plant with liquid metal of 800 degrees, so I down 4-5 liters of water and salty crackers on a regular 8 hour shift:P)
So 2-3 liters sounds good:)

Absolutely nothing wrong with those amounts.

The recommended water intake per day three liters per day for men and slightly less for women. The average person urinates one liter per day and loses another liter per day via sweating, breathing, and bowel movements. Add any amount of good physical activity and 3 liters is absolutely fine. A good workout can sweat a liter an hour easy. Note, you get about 20% of your water intake, about 1/3 of a liter from food intake - slightly more with fruits.

There is no lethal dose of water, other than drowning. In desert conditions, military and adventure races often drink a liter of water per hour during long marches and often 3-4 liters prior to the race/march. There are no known side effects -- other than physical effects of desert marching -- provided your liver is healthy, you are sweating without issues, and you urinate frequently.

People can die of water intoxication, where their electrolytes get so far out of whack that the heart has problems.

Two liters isn't going to kill you.

If you're drinking that much because you think it will flush out bad stuff, you should rethink that. Your kidneys are good at filtering out bad stuff, but if you consume too much water, your kidneys will start to lose good stuff like water-soluble vitamins.

If you're drinking that much because you are active and sweating that much, then you should be fine.

The only other potential problem is that if you have undetected diabetes, you might not realize that your blood sugar is too high because you are already drinking plenty of water. If your thirst is because of excessive sweating, then fine. If your thirst is really because your blood sugar is too high, then you need to be seen by a doctor.

People can drown can't they?
Yeah there is such a thing as too much water, It happens when the sodium in your bloodstream becomes too diluted by the water.
But you have to really force it down. Never don't drink if you are thirsty.
If your thirsty all the time for no reason (Not that you are, it sounds like its coz you exercise) You should go to the doctor as it can be a sypmtom of diseases such as diabetes.

Voila

yes and no --- there is a toxicity level in water --- as there is with anything you consume --- but at your rate --- i'd not be worrying unless its ice cold --- and taken in one hit --- i recall a report of a few years ago of a lady having run in a marathon --- only to pass away because she drank a great quantity of water that was chilled --- and she had a brain hemorrhage good luck

There is, it produces overhydration, hyponatraemia, brain swelling, fits and is occasionally fatal.

However the average adult requirement in average conditions of temperature and humidity without any specific exercise is 2 to 2.5 litres, to this you need to add up to 500mls/30 minutes of vigorous exercise, so your intake sounds fine.

GP for more years than I care to remember

yes there is such a thing called to much water, you can flood ur brain and die.

too much water can kill you. as long as you're drinking because you're thirsty and not just forcing it down you should be fine

that's very healthy!

Too much water can be dangerous, but it's a lot more that you're drinking.
