Is 10 years old too young?!

Question: Is 10 years old too young?
When my son was 10 years old, His father started teaching him about fitness and martial arts. He is doing much better than i or his fathe expected him to.. He is now 12, He has a very well defined six pack, cut arms/chest shoulders. of course there is no bulk muscle, its just really defined.
My husband is an Army Ranger and gave out son the APFT to see where he stands, Here are his results.
Push ups: 72
Sit ups: 61
Two miles run: 11:36
My husband says he is a "beast" but i am afraid that this is too much for his age. Is it? Advice?

Answers:

no. thats what my dad did to me. as ong as he doesnt lift weights, hell be fine.
when i was 10 i was kinda chubby, and my dad never let me eat and always made me excercise (but thats because i was eating 3 bowls of pasta for 1 meal), then i lost a lot of weight, like 25 pounds, and honestly i thank him for it. i love the fact that he was looking out for my weight, i couldve been obese by now.
its one of the things i love and appreciate. my mom though takes a complete FLIP everytime she sees me excercise, she never lets me do any excercise, i end up doing it behind her back. dont be like my mom. you wont win. try to find a comprimise, and as long as it doesnt hurt your son, let it be, or it will be done behind your back.

situps and push ups are harmless. they build muscle, and dont do anything bad. i do 400 situps a day, im trying to flatten my stomach.

just let your son me and hel love and appreciate you for it, because he probobly loves his body.its something to be proud about and it gives a huge boost of confidence.

No, if he is enjoying himself and is bonding with father, who are we to say. He will have to keep it up though, otherwise he will turn to flab. Let's hope he will continue in his teens and adulthood. When someone starts so young, it is also a way of life that one is developing.

Good for him, encourage him he is doing good. You will know when father pushes too far, then you will act upon it.

Good luck.

I'm assuming he's not on steroids, he's just a very active child who's a good athlete. I'd say it's fine, considering he doesn't have bulk muscle like you said. Maybe take him to a doctor if it's really concerning, but I think personally you just have a natural athlete on your hands and a very healthy and active boy!

Hi,
Unless your son is doing weight training with hardcore free weights, then from what you say, it is all ok. If he is having regular medical check ups, don't worry. by doing body weight exercises that is actually good for him.
But, at 12 although he is really healthy does he have much fun with mates, like normal 12 year old fun? He could be just taking it all a bit too serious! I am all for kids getting exercise and in general they don't but also I believe in them have fun too!

It depends on if your son likes to do it. If he is just doing it to make his father happy or if he shows that he doesn't like it you should step in. If he seems to like it and he is not doing anything extremely strenuous for a 12 year old, let him do it. Nowadays most kids sit in front of the T.V. all day, at least yours is getting some exercise.

If you do too much weight training at that age it can really decrease the childs height potential (growth). he needs to lay off but it's probably too late. You're really not supposed to get STARTED with serious training until your 13 and even then u are supposed to start light with higher reps

well that is very incredible but yes that is alittle early.i started when i was 14 and was told by doctors it was to young they said the right age is 16.it can effect his growth plates and he may be shorter then what he is supposed to be.

go for a medical check up..
