Should Protein Shakes be this expensive?!

Question: Should Protein Shakes be this expensive?
I asked a friend what one was best to have, he said personally he thinks its Met RX so I looked at the Holland & Barret website and saw a 2721g tub for £55.99. I thought it would last ages so thought I;d get it but haven't yet because I read this:

Add 4 scoops (600 calories) (167g) to 16 ounces of cold water and mix thoroughly in a blender or shaker.

That works out as only being 16 times I can use it!!! Do I not have to actually use that much or is it really that expensive!!

Answers:

Sometimes your friends have good intention but are no experts about your personal needs but if he thinks that this product is good, because of personal experience, you might take advantage of this, even if it cost your a little more.
My own experience is that you always pay for what you get. You can always get cheaper products, clothes, food but then you do not get quality. I only pay less for something if I can find the same product somewhere else cheaper or use coupons or sales.

£55.99 = $91.41
2721g is 113 scoops (one scoop is 24g...not 42g!) so $91.41 divided by 113 is $0.80 (£0.50) per scoop.
At 54kg (119lbs) you would only need 1 x 24g scoop twice a day (not 4 x 42g scoops all at once...those are for huge bodybuilders).

Your 2721g tub, 113 scoops, should last you 56 and a half days, about 2 months.
Maybe the manufacturer just added a little plastic scoop in their container and made it bigger so you’ll consume more and have to buy their product more often (it's a marketing device). Use a kitchen scale instead....or half a scoop twice a day in 3oz of milk as you really do not need 600 calories/day of supplements.

In the US, you can get 360g (12.7oz) Designer Whey for about $10 at the store ($10 = £6.13...), 15 servings per container (1 level scoop = 24g) 100 calories and a whopping 18 grams of protein in each scoop, twice a day (or 3 times a day if you’re big...but you’re not). The container is a big 7 inch tall one for only 360g...I wonder how big is your 2721 gram tub that would be 7 or 8 times more...like a big bucket?

So your 24g scoop would be $0.80 (£0.50) while the 24g Designer Whey scoop would be $0.66 (£0.41). You might try to find a £46.50 big 2721g tub out there or trust your friend and spring for the 9 or10 more £ which is not that much over a two month period.

Your huge 2721g bucket should last you about 2 months (if you use 1 x 24g scoop twice a day and not 167 grams) which is about the time you need to build up about 10 pounds of muscle mass (you have to use gym weight machines).

Use your proteins shakes with milk so you can get more calories and it tastes better (the chocolate Designer Whey tastes like Chocolate Nesquik).
You’re supposed to add a level scoop to 3oz of liquid/solid (water, milk, juice, yogurt, recipes...) twice a day, not 4 scoops to 16oz...

Once you gain 10lbs of muscle mass (4.5kg) in a couple of months, you can gain 5 more pounds in the third month (if you’re older than 21 and have enough male hormones) and then you won’t need proteins supplements, just eat healthy (lots of egg whites, lean meat, fish, dairies, legumes like peas, beans and lentils).

Holland and Barrett is really overpriced when it comes to protein, and I think Met RX is very overpriced, seeing it's just whey protein with some added BCAAs.
Personally I'd recommend buying Impact Whey Protein from MyProtein:
http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/imp…
It's only £25.99 for 2.5kg, and you really don't need anything more than that if you are just starting out weight lifting.
At your weight you need no more than 110g of protein in your diet, which should be pretty easy to get if you eat enough meat and have some protein powder.
Remember, if you don't do any weight lifting you'll just get fat, and might as well be eating cakes.

weight gainers are always more expensive..
and unless u do not eat enough food... or have big problems gaining mass should not be using weight gainer..

anyways regular why for 2.5 lbs should not be more then 40- 55 dollars after that its too pricy

Well really what we need to know is how much protein there is per scoop and then I will be able to tell you if you should take 4 scoops or not.

that's not protean shaker it a Weight gainer

thats a weight gainer, not a protein shake lol
