Problems with push ups?!

Question: Problems with push ups?
OK. i really want to join the marine corps in a couple years. and im trying to get my upper body strength up... i had to take accutane for a few months which hurt my joints a lot so i stopped. now im starting back up again. its been about 2 months since i got off and i can do like 40-50 pushups. im doing three sets of 30+ everyday and maxing out once a week. but the problem is im in a lot of pain by the end of my sets. and i cant tell if its good or bad. my progress isnt as fast as id hoped. im going to keep at it until i can do at least 100 but is there anything that i can do to make it faster or lessen the pain? the pain is in my shoulders and elbows.

Answers:

Three sets of 25, max. Even if you can do more, limit yourself to 25.

When you can do those easily, start wearing weighted vests. But still, never more than 25 to a set.

like the marines says pain is weakness leaving the body! but seems to me you're straining your muscles thats good your doing your sets and maxing out but atleast give yourself a day off with rest let your muscles relax. Other than that keep exercising and maxing out on your push ups you'll be able to do 60 to 100! goodluck and wish you the best with the marines! XD OOORAH!

mcjrotc!

use free weights. do 2/3 reps every other day.. you'll just break down your muscle over working it.. keep increasing in weight about 5 lbs every other week.. alternate between pushups and free weighs.. also don't ignore core workouts because they matter more than pushups in the corps

i dont think you are sopposed to do it everyday you have to give it a day to rest and dont forget the protein to rebuild

i go with james..my brother is super strong..he can do 75 in the mrning and 75 in the evning..he has no pain
hes 19..and he does sets of 25
