I heard it was bad to skip breakfast because it lowers your metabolism...?!

Question: I heard it was bad to skip breakfast because it lowers your metabolism...?
What if you drink coffee? I also heard caffeine raises your metabolism. I barely ever have time to eat breakfast, but I always drink coffee (I can easily put it in the cup holder on my bike or bring it on the bus, so time isn't an issue there).

Answers:

Everyone has 24 hours in a day. Why is it that one very busy person can make time to eat breakfast yet another says he has no time? The answer is time management.
Besides that - you may have had a substantial meal the night before. Your metabolism will bot slow down if you are active, only when inactive or minimal eating. I always have breakfast and feel better for it. However, I also know people who are very active (even more active than those who eat brekky) and function well during the day after skipping brekky. Everyone is different - there are no rules, and don't let science try and convince you otherwise, particularly medical science who base facts on stats too often and not common sense.

Coffee just makes you more energetic so you move around more, even get the shakes, so you burn up calories that way. Eating in the morning raises your metabolism because your body craves food when you wake up. Eating more often raises your metabolism because you have keep giving it the strength to work basically. You're better off eating 6-8 small healthy meals spread out over the course of the day, rather than 2 or 3 large meals where you just gorge on the food.

I used to never eat breakfast either, it was really bad for my concentration, either make the breakfast before you go to bed (porridge, then just heat it up in the morning really quickly, great slow release energy, and very filling) or get up ten minutes earlier. It really is worth it. Trust me.

It's true. No breakfast causes your body to starve, and it lowers your body metabolism, being somewhat in an idling mode until next "fuel intake."

Coffee is great, but keep in mind it's kinda fatty too, especially with the creamer and sugar, so probably it isn't the best idea. I say mineral water rocks better than coffee, because it turns your food softer, and easier to digest, and since it's easier to digest, energy is easier made from them. Just don't forget to use the energy for exercising, because else that idle energy will turn into fat.

and coffee wears your heart, too. and it can cause addiction. My grandma is kinda dependant on coffee, and when she goes without coffee, she'll get a banging headache.

The old saying "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is true. When you don't eat for long periods of time your body goes in to starvation mode where it stores fat. One of the best things you can do to raise you metabolism is to eat breakfast. If you don't have time for a full breakfast try grabbing a protein bar on you way out the door.

Coffee doesn't qualify as breakfast, and skipping breakfast does in fact slow down metabolism, as does skipping any meal. You should also know that 5-6 small meals are better for your metabolism than 3 large meals. You might want to try having a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast if you don't have much time in the morning. It doesn't take long to make/consume oatmeal.

Eating breakfast is the most important.. it's not only the metabolism is concerned but also if you skip meal, your body will consume your fats and it will result to acidosis.. leading to more serious illness. you know that caffeine is bad so you might as well limit it.

I've always been told it does. In my family we eat like kings at breakfast, like queens at lunch, and like dukes at dinner. About the coffee, i'd opt for lowfat....or just green tea (if you dont mind the flavour). Green tea is much healthier for you! i hope this helps :)
