How can I make my breakfast better?!

Question: How can I make my breakfast better?
Right now I eat at work, and I make myself a protein shake w/ a tablespoon of flax seeds, then an whole wheat light English muffin w/ margarine.

Should I try using jam/jelly/peanut butter instead? Something else entirely besides English muffin?

Answers:

Ditch the margarine entirely - that stuff is not good for you. You'd be better off with some light cream cheese or some nut butter (depending upon your taste that day - don't forget almond butter, etc.). The few carbs in the English muffin are no big deal. Vary it with some tasty breads from time to time so you don't get bored.

If you drink a protein shake because you work out and want to facilitate muscle repair you should be drinking it within at least one hour of working out. Timing is very important to encouraging protein synthesis. I worked out with a personal trainer for quite a while, they were a PhD and always very up to date on all the latest literature. They explained to me that it's essential to drink the protein shake (they recommended 100% whey) immediately following or within one hour of exercise. I've also heard the same thing recommended by Olympic trainers. If you're going to be taking protein why not make it work more efficiently? If you workout in the morning it's also not great to work out without eating first. Without energy your workout will never be as effective as if you'd already eaten. Just a banana would be great.

An English muffin is really just a lot of empty carbs. Unless it's a really good multi-grain English muffin, but I've never seen one myself. Margarine is also a little iffy... It's literally made of hydrogenated fat which is completely artificial. It's liquid fat that has been altered on the molecular level to make it solid. Generally nutrition/health experts say that if the label has hydrogenated fat on the ingredients list, stay away, let alone the only ingredient!

I'm sorry- I know I've just totally torn apart your whole breakfast routine there. But you asked. I'd recommend a fruit and a multi/whole grain something for breakfast. Oatmeal is amazing for you and not hard to cook. If you have or can get a cheap slow cooker (about for a small one from Amazon), you can cook steel cut oats in it overnight so it's ready when you wake up first thing in the morning. Then, if you don't have time at home, you can throw it in some Tupperware with a spoon and take it to work. I've attached a recipe. Another good option would be just switching out your English muffin for some delicious multi-grain toast smeared with a little nut butter for protein and fat. Rather than peanut butter necessarily, although that's not a bad option, I'd recommend almond butter. It's more expensive, but you don't need a lot, and it's much much healthier. You probably know peanut butter is quite fatty, which is fine, you need fat. But why not get more bang for your buck by making the fats you do it eat healthy fats? Almonds are full of healthy fats.
Then it would be great to have a fruit. Not the same kind every day. You want balance and variety. Banana, apple, orange, pear, red grapes, all easy to get all year round.
Or, if you really want a drink of some kind with breakfast, try a smoothie! I like to mix a little bit of peeled raw ginger (which is insanely healthy) in a chunk about the size of 1/2 the tip of your thumb into a blender, add a 1/4 C of pomegranate juice (POM is the brand I like because it's 100% pomegranate) and blend well. Then I add some frozen peaches and strawberries, some reduced fat kefir (yogurt drink), blend again, and it makes a fantastic tasting and wonderfully healthy smoothie. My boyfriend loooves them.

So- hope some of that helps! Good luck with it :)

Organic peanut butter would be the healthiest choice out of those options; just check the label on the jar, make sure the ingredients say 100% peanuts and nothing else.
