Does going topless help weight loss?!

Question: Does going topless help weight loss?
Hi, I'm a 20 years old male currently trying to burn some fat (319 pounds atm) and I read an article saying that drinking cold water burned calories. They explained that the water had to be heated up to body temperature and that this burned some calories. (albeit very few...). I really have a hard time drinking cold water though (I drink my at room temperature).

I'm wondering would simply foregoing my shirt in the house burn calories? I researched this topic but strangely found nothing...

Having no t-shirt would make me colder and my body would burn calories by trying to keep me at a normal body temp right? So it would be a passive calorie burn active the whole day.

It's important to note that I live in Quebec and were in winter too... so room temp is around 22 degrees Celsius.

I wouldn't get sick if anyone is wondering, I did this often in the past for multiple reasons (t-shirt got wet and I let it dry instead of taking another one and putting wet one in the wash etc.)

Of course, I don't rely on only this in my quest to slim down. I started exercising and eating a lot less and healthier foods too.

So what do you think? It's an interesting question in my opinion.

Answers:

Put on some clothes. Going around topless in a cold room simply means that your body will 'pull in' blood from your extremities to keep your core warm and your circulatory at optimal temperature (hence, 'blue' fingers).

And like drinking iced liquids, the extra calories expended would be minimal.

I'd suggest the route of exercise and eating well as you're already doing.

It would help, but it wouldn't be pleasant! I'd stick to eating healthily, and smaller portions, and moving continually, as well as getting at least an hour of exercise each day!
You do burn more energy in the colder months as your body tries to regulate the temperature but that's basically through shivering, and your hairs standing on end etc.

Dude ... you weigh 319 pounds. Three hundred and nineteen. Yes, every activity performed by your body burns calories, including staying warm. But you're WAAAAAY beyond that. If you're counting on losing weight by taking off your shirt, I seriously doubt you're going to make any real progress.

uhhhh. I heard about this as well. truth is I hardly believe it. if anything it makes you suffer.
if your tired, you take your shirt off and its cold out, than of course you'll have to run around to stay warm. but you can only do so much to lose weight. just cleaning around won't help you that much.
you're probably burning just a few calories, not as many as you'd want too.

** Eat six mini meals a day. Exercise and before every meal, drink two tall glasses of water, (about 16 oz.) this will fill you up and you will automatically eat less. This really works, so be patient. Good Luck to you

Yes, but the numbers are so small as to be irrelevant to your situation.

Wow, you are getting some REALLY rude answers. Clearly all people who have never had a weight issue. Obviously you can't start off jogging a mile everyday for weight loss, you'd kill your knees. But no, being colder wont help, but if it does, it will be so insignificant, it's just stupid. Bring your calorie intake down, get about 2,000 calories a day or so (depending on what you get now). Start by going for 30 minute walks everyday.

That will give you slow but steady weightloss, I'd guess two pounds a day maybe. If you feel up to it, walk more. Also your walks should be fairly brisk if you can. You know your body, you know if you're pushing yourself. Just because Joe Sixpack can run six miles, does not mean you need to do that to lose weight. If you push yourself, you are working just as hard as anyone else.

I am a wrestler, I know more about losing weight then any other person that will answer your question. And I did do it the unhealthy way for the first two years of high school, but I got a diet plan junior and senior year and did it right. Anyway, simply wrestling philosophy, the less clothes you wear, the less you will sweat, the less calories your burn. Thats why I wore under armor two t-shirts and a hoodie to practice. The amount of calories you would burn by not wearing a shirt is completely insignificant.

The problem is that you already have quite a bit of fat to insulate you so it doesn't take much effort to keep your body temperature up. I believe the idea your heard of it referring to the "Thermal diet". Please click the link in the source and watch the news video on the page. It's basically just an extreme version of forcing your body to keep it's temperature up. I'd have to agree that think helps weight loss because though I'm completely sedentary, I'm always cold at home and I have not gained weight no matter how much I eat in the past 2 years.

Keeping warm takes very few calories. Taking off your shirt will take about an extra 50 calories a day to keep you warm.

Here's the tricky part. Calories are chemical energy. Your body converts a lot of chemical energy into other forms of chemical energy that are excreted, and if your temperature drops very slightly, one of the ways your body keeps warm is to start turning that chemical energy into heat. So some of that 50 calories will come from energy use that is part of your basal resting rate, further reducing your weight loss from going topless.

You didn't get to be 319 pounds by wearing a shirt. If you want to lose weight, you need to commit to a reasonable diet plan without trying to find magical shortcuts.
