push ups and results: week 2? "muscle soreness"?!

Question: Push ups and results: week 2? "muscle soreness"?
Hi,

I'm 20 years old, 5"11 and weigh about 150 lbs.; I just finished the first day of week 2 push up exercises, and compared to the previous weeks exercises, it was relatively easy. Also my pectorals, and body are not sore after my workout. Is this a good sign, or a bad sign? I'm doing push ups to bulk up a little, and tone out my upper body before the summer, so any advice or knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Answers:

Push ups are a great way to add some shape and size to your chest. Just make sure you vary what kind of pushups you are doing. For example, through in some incline and decline pushups to get a more even, full look in your chest. Now, incline and decline works backwards for pushups than it would for a bench press. When your body is in an inclined pushup position, you are targeting your lower chest, and when in a declined position, youre hitting the upper chest. For inclined pushups (lower chest) take a chair or something of equal hight, position your hands on the butt part of the chair, feet normal and do your pushups. Really maintain good form and engage your core to keep the chair from sliding if you can. For Decline pushups, put your feet on the chair and do them. This will really give you a nice full upper and lower chest. Also, do some diamond pushups to strengthen your triceps which will in turn, strengthen your regular pushups. Also throw some wide armed pushups and pushup-jacks in there too. As for the soreness, it is can be normal that your not feel sore anymore. Either or muscles are strengthening or, it could mean that your adapting to the workout too much and not benefiting as much. If this is the case, try doing the pusups differently, like in higher rep sets, slower negatives (the downward motion) or in quick spurts of 5-10 with a brief 5 second rest then repeated. Also, if you have access to a gym, throw in some bench presses, both barbell and dumbell, that will definately boost your growth. Hope this helps and good luck
