What exercise can I do whilst I am non weight-bearing?!

Question: What exercise can I do whilst I am non weight-bearing?
I recently had ankle surgery and cannot walk or put weight on my left leg. I have barely done a thing for 3-4 weeks and have put on about 2lbs which I'm not worried about (especially because all I've done is eat biscuits in that time) but I want to do some exercise. Not just to maintain or lose weioght but to keep up my strength more than anything.

What exercises can I do which don't require two legs?

Answers:

The answer above did have a few good suggestions, but they are still questionable. You would need a way to play table tennis, but a good game of that can be decent exercise.

But weights are probably one of the most likely ideas you can try. You can really focus on upper body exercises. If you don't have weights, you might even be able to get creative until you can buy some. Like filling a bottles with sand, or finding something else in the house that weighs around 3-8 pounds. Then you can do bicep curls and other things. You can also try a routine to music and just try to get your heart rate up a little.

There are things out there (like arm ergometers) that focus entirely on arm and upper body exercise, but they can be really expensive.

The boxing idea may also work. If you can also find a cardio kick boxing routine online or a dvd, and only do the arms of the exercise to the music.

I don't know how functional your left leg is, but can you still move the hip and knee? Maybe while sitting you can just do some gently knee extensions, and hip movements. But don't do anything that makes your ankle hurt more or anything. If you can really move your upper leg well, maybe you can somehow attach low weights on your shin and do leg extensions. That could really help keep some strength up in your injured leg. Also could be good to not lose any range of motion in those joints

I don't know if you can try this either, but maybe you can stand and sit with one leg. Find something to have in front of you for balance, and stand up and down on your good leg.

If you can lay on the floor, on you back or front, you can do some other exercises. I don't know if you can get on your knees to do a modified push-up, but that would be some good arm exercises. Or on your back you can possibly do sit-ups or crunches. You would need to have your legs straight, or up in the air, or possibly just keep your left leg off the ground for this. If you had a partner to help you, by holding your good leg stable or something it may help.

But as you can see, you just need to be a bit creative. I know there are more ideas out there you can try. You just want to move and increase your heart rate. Even if that means wiggling in your chair, shaking your arms, and leaning side to side (I know a very ridicules example) could be beneficial for you.

But to finish this up, I have helped with people in wheel chairs do chair exercises. The teacher of those classes would say, "move whatever moves, and shake whatever shakes".

Good luck

Well you could always lift weights or play table tennis but that depends on whether you can stand or not. You could also try boxing.
