Am i eating enough calories?!

Question: Am i eating enough calories?
Im a 17 year old male and im about 5'9 and currently weigh 163 pounds. I dont care about losing weight i just want to lose fat, a lot of my fat is in my butt and stomach. i have weight training 2 to 3 times a week. I eat special k cereal for breakfast which is about 170 calories, for lunch im guessing i eat under 300 calories, and i eat a fiber bar when i get home and usually snack on something else later in the afternoon but nothing too big. For dinner i eat the cereal again but sometimes i eat something else with it so that's about 500 calories. Im also taking green tea pills that are supposed to burn fat and boost your metabolism which is what burns the fat. And i drink 3 to 4 bottles of water a day. I started off weighing 175 pounds and ive dropped about 12 pounds in a month doing this but i dont see it in terms of fat loss, i do however see it in the weight room. All of my maxes have gone down but you cant tell by looking at me. Im confused on why im losing muscle but not fat, am i not getting enough calories? my mom said if i dont eat enough calories my body will go into starvation mode and maintain fat and thats the exact opposite of what im trying to do so please tell me what im doing wrong before i lose even more muscle.

you are not getting enough calories. your body will then break down muscle tissue for energy, especially if you are doing weights. your muscles do get somewhat damaged from lifting. when you are not getting proper nutrition, your muscles cannot repair. they especially cannot repair when your body is "eating" the tissue for energy. that is why you are noticing the decline in lifting. your muscles are not as strong from this. also, muscle weighs more than fat, so your fast weight loss is mainly from lost muscle.

ideally, you should be getting around at least 2000 calories a day, with the exercise. if you want to maintain your weight, it should be closer to 2500. 2000 calories or below will cause you to lose weight, but if it is too low, your body will continue to feed off the muscles for energy.

you also need an adequate amount of protein for proper muscle recovery.

You have to maintain muscle by getting 1 - 1.5 grams of protein per POUND of body weight, so you would want to be eating 163 grams (at least) of protein each day.

Do not avoid fats/carbs, just reduce your in-take of them, your body needs carbohydrates to maintain muscle along with the protein. Eat meals regularly in smaller quantity, 6-7 meals through out the day, all of them should have a decent amount of protein in them.

Well ur eating less than 1,500 calories (which is half the recommended calorie intake 4 females) u should be eating 2,000 calories a day - ur moms right.. ur body will go into starvation mode and u will put all the weight that u lost back on. just eat a healthy balanced diet and exercise DON'T starve urself anymore.

I think thats good but rememeber dont eat junk food only heaalthy and exercise often to gain muscle. And yes it is true your body will go into starvation mode if u sudenly start eating less

Your mom's right. Your body will eventually go into starvation mode and start feeding off your muscle instead of your fat and that's exactly what's happening. You're still growing so you need to make sure you eat well. I suggest you have a good breakfast like: 3 egg whites, with a slice of whole wheat bread, a glass of milk, and a piece of fruit, or you can keep on eating the special K just make sure you add a fruit like bananas or strawberries. For lunch you should have something like a turkey breast sandwich. Make sure that you eat something when you get hungry so that your metabolism is on a roll and doesn't slow down. Snack on anything from an apple, to a celery stalk with peanut butter, or something as simple as a granola bar will do. For dinner have something like pasta or white rice with a nice side of veggies and a portion of lean meat like: chicken breast, fish, or lean meat or pork. Make sure you incorporate lean meat, carbohydrates, and fruits or veggies into every big meal so you have a well-balance diet. You can eat junk food once in a while, but remember that you have to have things in portions. Good Luck!
