Dieting and gained weight?!

Question: Dieting and gained weight?
I started dieting about 2 weeks ago. I cut out all fast food and pop and junk food. (I used to drink 2 ltr pop a day and eat fast food a min. of 10 times a week)
I replaced all chips, chocolate, snack foods with fruits and veggies. I eat 6 small meals a day now instead of the 2 huge daily meals I used to eat.

I drink about 8 glasses of water a day now. I also started working out with a trainer in the past 2 weeks but I have gained weight.

How does someone gain weight in my situation?

There could be several reasons why you have gained weight. Without knowing the current weight you are (and where), exercise routines and diet, it would be hard to determine why exactly.

. Your diet could be higher in calories. Even though you ate poorly before, it may have been low in calories. Even though soda has a lot of sugar, caffeine is an appetite suppressant, while exercise is an appetite stimulant.

. With an increased caloric intake, you could be gaining muscle with proper exercise or fat if the exercise is lacking.

. Increased fluid intake will add a significant amount of water weight. You are drinking less soda as well and caffeine is a diuretic (removes water). Eight glass of water can equate to about 4 lbs alone (1 pound for 16 oz).

. Increased fiber in diet can add weight as well. Fiber holds a lot of water weight, so not only are you drinking more water, but your digestive track holds much more becasue of the fiber. Greaser foods move much faster through your system as well, so your bowels will be evacuated much more often as well.

Between water and fiber, your body can easily add 5-15 lbs. This is the body weight that shouldn't be worried about. This is healthy weight that doesn't effect your appearance. This is also the weight that crash diets remove.

These are the reasons that scales should not be the sole measure of progress. A tape measure is a much better way to chart your progress. You may have gained 10 pounds, but who cares if you did if you have a smaller waist and can fit into jeans two sizes smaller?
