Help figuring out what I did wrong with exercise.?!

Question: Help figuring out what I did wrong with exercise.?
Several months ago I had vowed to get fit and exercise daily. I had started a walking running routine that I did at least 5 days a week. I started off barely being able to run any and it took about 15 minutes to complete the mile. I had gotten to where I could do the mile in about 9 to 10 minutes and able to run a little bit more. I did lose about 20 pounds. However after several months I hit a stand still and nothing seemed to be happening. I was not losing any more weight and was not toning any more. I was doing sit ups, crunches, squats and things like that also. I spoke to doc wanting a magic energy weight loss med and he would not give to me just told me to start eating a little before I ran to boost metabolism. Well I got discouraged and quite. I have now put back on about 10 of the pounds I lost and feel like crap. I am going to start again but am looking for suggestion that could help me not have same problems I had before. I am 37 and in descent shape. I do smoke but am trying to quite. Thanks for any inpute.

Without wanting to simplify the matter too much, its all about calorie intake.
Exercise is only 1 portion of the whole picture.
Is your diet/sleep in check?

As you already know, its all about routine, you'll find your rhythm in due time, just don't give up.
