Question: Lifting weights (dumbbells)...question about after snack?
i started using dumbbells today to start toning up my arms. i also did a minor cardio workout.

but afterwards i had one of those Carnation Breakfast Shakes...which has a lot of protein.
is it good to have that after working out?

Not really.
The thing that you have to be aware with when drinking/eating protein is that it takes a while for your body to digest it and absorb it. So you want to consume normal types of protein a few hours BEFORE working out. That way it's being absorbed right as your body needs it.

The best thing to have after a work out (directly after) is whey protein. Whey is absorbed very fast into the body, very fast. So fast that you want to consume it within 30 minutes before or after the workout, so again your body is absorbing it right as it needs it.

Having that shake right after a work out isn't a total waste it's just that you might not be getting the maximum benefit from it by drinking it after rather than before.

Don't eat a Snickers bar... I actually can't believe someone suggested that. Yeah lets just consume all the fat I just burned working out that way I defeat the whole purpose of going to the gym. Sorry but the fats and sugars found in candy bars are NOT the healthy kinds or the kinds you should be consuming. Also urine color isn't all based on protien. Protien in urine is usually a white color, not yellow. And darker colored urine just means you are dehydrated, not that you are peeing out excess protien. Your body will get rid of protien that's not being used, but urine color is not a good way of determining that.

Also just be aware of the caloric, fat, and sugar that's in those drinks. You don't want to be consuming something that has as many calories as a whole meal. I wouldn't exceed 150 cals per drink. I know you are trying to lose body fat so you do need to watch the cals.

Ingesting protein after a workout is vital. I dont know about the carnation drink but i would deff recommend drinking a protein shake after working out. Lifting breaks down protein in muscles, protein is vital to building muscle which is why it is so important to take it no more than 30 minutes after working out.



I have an idea for you. How about one day you drink your shake and then check out the color of your pee. Then one day you don't drink your shake then check out your pee. If your pee is a fuller and darker color when you drink your shake that means you're just peeing out the extra proteins and vitamins. Ideally, the good thing to eat and drink after a work out is glass of chocolate milk and a snack with a good mix of fats and protein, like a Snickers bar. Don't waste your money.



dude...food before for energy...good balance of proteins and good carbs...then weights and cardio for 40-50 minutes, after snack of proteins and L-Glutamine....muscles are on the way...you will be looking hot naked in no time..



wont hurt you but maybe it would give you more energy for workout if you drank it before.
