How do I find out the amount of calories I should eat a day and how many I could!


Question: How do I find out the amount of calories I should eat a day and how many I could safely burn in a week?
I'm 5'9 and about 190lbs. I know I'm quite a bit over weight and I'm trying to lose 30 to 35lbs then maintain that weight.
How many calories should I intake and in what food groups should I eat the most. I know to stay away from white bread and tortillas and things like that, but should I also stay away from white rice? I know white rice is relatively low in calories but I don't know if it hinders weight lose for any reason.
Is it better to drink water or juice, and does drinking 0cal water drinks hurt my diet in anyway? I know it's no calories but I didn't know if the artificial sweeteners might make me retain water weight(that probably sounds really weird to you but for some reason it makes sense to me. haha!)

Well, let see: right now...at rest you burn 1900 calories a day. Your weight times time ten is known as your resting metabolic rate. If you do nothing but lay in bed all day that is what you would burn. If you drop down 500 calories from that you would be at 1400 which would enable you to burn 2 lbs. a week. If you are active at all, then you can add your exercise calories back into the 1400. As far as food groups go you want to eat most of your calories from carbohydrates: whole grains, fruits, vegetables. As far as the white rice is concerned, it really isn't bad. It just isn't as filling as brown rice. You may have a tendency to feel hungry sooner after eating white than brown. Water is fine. In fact water is best. Do not deprive yourself of recreational calories. You can use about 10% of your calories for a sweet or something similar. Good luck!
