Exercising but not losing much weight?!

Question: Exercising but not losing much weight?
So I am 19 and a little overweight on the chubby side and I have been trying to lose weight and body fat a my new years resolution. I am 5'10" by the way. Back in October-November 2010 I weighed myself at around 180 and occasionally 185 (I have one of those inaccurate digital scales).

Since the new year I have been eating about 1600-1700 calories a day with few exceptions (like eating out with friends). Probably less than 5 times that I ate above the said range. For the last 6 weeks I have also been jogging 3 times a week for 45 minutes and doing progressively more push ups every other day.

Physically, I don't see much difference in myself. I still have a fat belly, my man boobs are however spreading away from the center of my chest and there seems to be no fat in the space between my man boobs but they still look about the same size.

In early Feb I weighed myself at around 180 with occasionally being at 177. Today I weighed myself again at 176 and for some reason got 171 twice. So my question is this...how is it that I only lost 1 pound in almost a month?

Say that my basic metabolism is around 2500 per day so I lost 700 calories a day from eating less. That's 4900 calories in a week, then I jog about 1500 calories in a week which makes it about 6400 calorie loss per week. Say it's only been 3 weeks, I would have lost about 19200 calories or about 5 pounds. What am I doing wrong?

First of all, you must realize that you are adding muscle mass. Muscle weighs more (for a given volume) than fat does. So, you may well be losing fat but your weight isn't changing that much.
Secondly, the "I reduced calories so much so that means x amount of weight loss" thing really doesn't work exactly. There are a lot of factors that go into weight loss other than just calorie count. I'm not going to go into glycemic index and insulin production and all of that. If you would like a really entertaining explanation try watching the documentary "Fat Head". You can get it on Netflix.
Good luck on the weight loss.

Jogging is not going to do much for you. If you're not going to run full-out, then its not worth it unless it's just a warm-up. Definitely do some weight lifting or other toning exercises like lunges (AWESOME for butt and thighs!). You might not see the difference on the scale right away, but that's just because you're gaining muscle, and that's a good thing. If you can, try to take classes such as zumba or cycling. They'll be tough at first, but you'll be working with professionals who will push you. Plus they're fun, you'll get hooked, and you'll see the difference fast.

Doing more intense, short burst-typed workouts burn more calories and speed up your metabolism. So maybe changing your workouts would benefit you. Lifting Weights, running sprints, kick boxing, swimming, etc. are all great forms of exercise you could try out. You can even do some outside stuff like playing a pick up game of football with some buddies or going mountain biking. Also, maybe you should tone up your stomach by doing core workouts. I recommend plank, side planks, leg lifts, and crunches with weights. Also calorie counting can only benefit so much. It's more about what you eat, rather than how much. Eat all natural foods, don't drink any soda, and make sure to get plenty of protein. If you need more advice, feel free to contact me. Good luck.
