The external oblique muscle (of the abdomen) (also external abdominal oblique muscle ) is the largest and the most superficial (outermost) of the three flat muscles of the lateral anterior abdomen.

Structure The external oblique is situated on the lateral and anterior parts of the abdomen. It is broad, thin, and irregularly quadrilateral, its muscular portion occupying the side, its aponeurosis the anterior wall of the abdomen. In most humans (especially females), the oblique is not visible, due to subcutaneous fat deposits and the small size of the muscle.

Sit up and crunches with variation can help you build your side abs

Yes, incorporate loads of oblique exercises to build those muscles up, try doing bycicle curls, single leg jack knives and russian twists follow with plank, side plank and then side plank with curl. Type these into any search engine for pictures to execute good technique.

Another thing you can do is incorporate some boxing sit ups, get a medicine balls hold it over your head and crunch up, don't move your upper arms away from your ears or move the medicine balls from the starting position if you do you aren't doing it properly. When done properly you will begin to build that special muscle in the ribs that boxers have, this is vital for them so they don't break a rib when sparring.

Yes, those muscles are called your obliques. If you don't want to use weights you can use the following method to tone that area relatively easy. Do whats called "twists". Twist your body while you are standing as if you are turning around, but keep your feet planted, so your upper body is the only one twisting. While doing this, flex your ab muscles. Do about 60 times in the morning and before you go to bed.

basically they are called the serratus anterior muscles and u can actually make them better by doing pullup exercises, or doing dumbell pullovers
