Is my weight loss goal reasonable?!

Question: Is my weight loss goal reasonable?
At the start of February I weighed in at 243 pounds. This morning I weighed in at 231.8.

I am a 28 year old guy, and I am finally trying to shed off the large amount of weight I have gained over the years. My long term goal is to get down to 180ish. My weekly weight loss has been 0.8 pounds a week (something i have greatly over shot each week so far) which in theory puts my goal somewhere in the lines of 81 weeks (which is sometime in early September).

My plan of action currently is:
- Using a calorie counter on my android which breaks foods into greens, yellows and reds based on their caloric density (all veggies are green, white breads and pastas are yellow, steak and chips are red, etc) which says at my weight, age and activity level I should be aiming for no more than 2480 calories a day (I never go over). I have been logging everything I eat so it's been making me very conscious about how much I eat, when I eat and what I eat. I am not starving myself and rarely find myself hungry except for before meals.

- At least an hour of cardio every day except for weekends. Due to it being weather winter it has been fast paced walks (I always push myself to go a little faster and harder than is directly comfortable) and Dance Dance Revolution (please don't laugh at me :( It's a decent cardio work out). If I have time I sometimes do both; one in the morning and one at night for 2 hours of cardio. Once spring arrives I'll be adding biking and swimming to the lists.

- I aim to do at least one physical activity on the weekends. So far these have included skating on the canal, sliding down an incredibly high hill on crazy carpets and snow shoeing.

I have the following questions:

- Is my goal reasonable? Is it healthy to lose that much weight in that much speed at that much time?

- Am I going to fast right now? Or will the weight loss slow down to about a pound a week after I lose some of this extra bulk?

- How do I keep myself motivated? The past 3 weeks has been a rather big change in lifestyle for me. I sometimes find myself not wanting to even more or really really really crazing things that arn't good for me at all (that I even really didn't like -before- I took up all this diet and exercise, like potato chips)

Thank you for any answers or comments.

Answers:

Most books say that a pound a week is a good goal for weight loss. Your plan sounds good, especially the fact that you aren't relying on diet alone to lose the weight, but are stepping up your activity level at the same time.

The large loss to date may just be the effect of the diet and activity changes you have made. If the loss continues at anything close to that rate, you should consider seeing a doctor. You should slow down to a reasonable level pretty soon, just as soon as you get rid of the real excess. You are correct there.

Motivation is tough. You might consider posting weight a chart on the kitchen cabinet, right out where you can see it when you reach for the chips.
