How to work on cardio with a heart condition?!

Question: How to work on cardio with a heart condition?
I was born with a heart murmur (the kind where two of the leaflets are fused together) and i'm trying to burn off my winter weight for bikini season but i find that when I run or even jog for too long my chest starts hurting really REALLY badly. It's a little embarassing to run with my sister because she just had a baby and runs longer distances than I can.
So i was wondering how can I do my cardio exercises without getting the pain in my chest?
or if I keep doing it the way i'm doing (walk, jog, run, jog, run, jog, walk) the pain will eventually stop as my muscles strengthen?

Answers:

what you're doing is great! It's called Interval Training, but here's the (I guess you could say) more effective way of doing it.
Sprint for 30 seconds
Break for 30 seconds (walk)
Sprint for 30 seconds
Break for 30 seconds (walk)
etc...
If sprinting is too much you can also go for a light run or a jog-as long as your heart rate is up.
Never stop during your breaks, you want to always keep moving!

You could also fast walk (about 3mph/5k/h) on a high incline. I like to do about 10 on the treadmill, but up and down hills is great too.

There are also different activities you can do for cardio.

You can swim. Also with swimming, you can do the same things with running, but with the incline one, go for distance instead.

Just play sports. Sports where you are running and up and going is great! Soccer, basketball, baseball, etc... I do kickboxing and it's great because it's so much fun and you work your entire body too!

My favourite is skipping!!! It's so easy yet so effective! It's cheap too and you can do it in your backyard. You can mix things up by going faster, hopping on 1 foot, criss-cross your feet when you jump, and try and do a double spin in 1 jump, there's a ton more! Even if your friends want to do something fun (or just be kids again) you can do double dutch!

Hope I helped!! :)

you're comparing yourself to your sister who just had a baby, yet you have a heart condition. give yourself a break. regarding what type of running or exercise to do, i would not rely on answers frmo the yahoos on this one. please make an appointment with your doctor and ask this question there because you do have a heart condition.

It seems to me that you need the opinion and advice of your cardiologist.

You're not asking a question about cellulite over here!

What Betty said - you really need to discuss this with your doctor/cardiologist.....
