Why is my weight coming up as obese?!

Question: Why is my weight coming up as obese?
I am a young teen, am 5'2, and weigh 147 lbs. My BMI comes up as 26.9. It says I am very overweight and am almost obese. But I have NO (I mean NO) body fat. You can see my ribs. I've checked several different calculators and they all say the same thing. Why is my weight coming up as obese?

Answers:

you are probably just really muscular

BMI is a very poor measure for those that are physically fit, or at the extremes of height or natural build. It is also more accurate for adults than children.

As you are quite short, BMI may well be skewed. Being able to see your ribs is not a particularly good indicator, as fat deposits appear in different places on different people, with some individuals gaining weight on hips and thighs, but not elsewhere.

As long as your body shape is not causing problems with physical fitness or flexibility, I would not be overly concerned about BMI. If, however, you do want to check further, get your doctor or a specialist to do a body fat measurement - this can even be done in some pharmacies.

Jonathan hit it right on the mark but to add...

BMI is not a good indicator of obesity... do you exercise regularly? are you fit? If you have a large muscle mass which can weigh more than fat, then you cannot use the BMI scale to assess your body shape. BMI applies to the norm.

However, you cannot look at your ribs and tell yourself that you are skinny. Body fat deposition varies depending on genetics and maybe you have a very large ***? If you are active and outgoing, and carry large muscle mass, don't worry about BMI. If you are a couch potato and assume to be think by looking at your ribs, then you are overweight.

As a young teen, you are still growing, and BMI is usually standardized to a fully grown person (neglecting development), so until your maximal height has been reached, I wouldn't rely on BMI too much...

FYI, your weight is coming up as "overweight" because BMI is calculated as

weight in kg/height in meters squared...
66.7kg/[1.5478 m]^2 = 27.8

from the height and weight you just told me, you are actually 27.8.
People tend to overestimate their height and underestimate their weight, so I wouldn't be surprised if this number was 29 or higher. Good luck

just stop being sexually active. that should solve that problem.
