How is it possible for any healthy person in America to make less than $100,000 !

Question: How is it possible for any healthy person in America to make less than $100,000 per year?
Do they just have zero ambition? Are they simply not very smart?

I mean, take me, for example. I'm not all that smart, but I did study when I needed to study, and I did reasonably well in college, and I went to a decent law school. My first job out of law school, at age 25, was an associate position with a law firm, and my starting pay was $160,000 per year before bonuses.

Sure, I had to work long hours sometimes, but that's part of the game.

But anyway, if I'm making $180K at age 26 (and remember, I'm not all that smart), how is it possible that the median wage in this country is something pathetic like $39,000? Do those people have absolutely no skills or ambitions in life whatsoever?

I mean, if I had been born smarter and studied harder, I'd be making a lot more than $180K at this age! I would have gone straight from undergrad into a physics Ph.D. program and then into a hedge fund. You can make millions in that industry quite easily just through fees and commissions alone.

But I'm not a very intelligent man; I'm just average. How is it possible that my salary is now in the 98% percentile, at age 26? Am I somehow smarter than 98% of all Americans? I really doubt it. I think I'm pretty average. Maybe people are just lazier than me or something.

Answers:

You don't need to keep reiterating that you're not that smart, your question itself does that for you.

Not everyone sees money as their primary motivation. For example: I want to be a municipal police officer. I joined the Air Force for 4 years to get the veteran's points, and now I'm attending a university thanks to the GI Bill pulling a 4.0 with a psychology major. My dream job will pay me around $50,000/year to start.

There is not a correlation between intelligence and income. Arrogance, yes- but not intelligence.
